ONG Postdoc Robert Chapman starts Ambizione Fellowship

Dr Robert Chapman is starting his four-year Ambizione Fellowship in the Optical Nanomaterial Group with the goal of developing quantum photonic integrated circuits.

by Sara Gasser

Chapman’s Ambizione project will establish the capability of the up-and-coming photonics platform lithium niobate on insulator as a technology for quantum computing. This will include generating single particles of light (photons) and performing quantum computing tasks with nanofabricated waveguide circuits. Lithium niobate has extraordinary material properties that make it a powerful technology that is yet to be applied to quantum technology.

This project will build on the world-leading expertise in lithium niobate fabrication at the Optical Nanomaterial Group, led by Professor Rachel Grange. The group has already demonstrated advanced applications of lithium niobate on insulator photonics for spectroscopy, nonlinear optics and telecommunications. Chapman’s Ambizione project will establish a new state-of-the-art photonic quantum computing platform.
