external pageCheck how we experimentally show the influence of the facet in the emission spatial spectrum and we theoretically investigate five different facet designs for shaping the emitted light spatial spectrum. These designs present a diversity of options for manipulating the light distribution. For instance, one design shows large angular light deflection (more than 80° in the radial direction), which is relevant for integrated circuits. A second design shows homogeneous spreading across the normal direction with azimuthal selectivity, which is suitable for local light delivery applications since it acts like a point-source at the facet of the nanowaveguide.

-external pageIn Nano Letters, Flavia Timpu et al. showed enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) from a hybrid metal–dielectric nanodimer consisting of an inorganic perovskite nanoparticle of barium titanate (BaTiO3) coupled to a metallic gold (Au) nanoparticle. BaTiO3–Au nanodimers of 100 nm/80 nm sizes are fabricated by sequential capillarity-assisted particle assembly.

We welcome Romolo Savo, who joins our team !

external pageEnhancing Guided Second-Harmonic Light in Lithium Niobate Nanowires.

We experimentally demonstrate practical approaches to enhance second-harmonic (SH) generation in individual lithium niobate nanowires (NWs) with a sub-micrometer cross-section and length up to tens of micrometers. We establish that parametric interactions of guided modes propagating along the NW determine the SH output power, which can be therefore controlled by the NW length. We show that the SH power is increased by about 84 times at wavelengths corresponding to modal phase-matching. Importantly, at non-phase-matched wavelengths the SH power can be improved by a factor of up to 9.3 by adjusting the NW length with a focused ion beam. We also characterize SH emission directionality, which can be further tailored for applications in integrated optical circuits and nonlinear microscopy.

January 2015

The Optical Nanomaterial Group started in January 2015. We are an interdisciplinary team and our goal is to understand the optical behavior of oxide materials at the nanoscale for developing applications in optoelectronics or bioimaging.
